What this blog needs is a little culture and that starts now!
We'd like to take you to Turkey and introduce you to their national sport - oil wrestling. No, this is for real. You can read about it on Wikipedia.
Every year in a place called Edirne in Eastern Turkey since 1362 (roughly around the time when Madonna started singing*), boys and men have gathered to wrestle.
* = oldest joke in the world that has practically also been around since like 1362.
Anyway. Since 1362 - think about it. That's like more than 500 years before they even decided to open America.
The wrestling tournament is the oldest continuously running, sanctioned sporting competition in the world. And we have the photos...
The pictures were taken by the photographer Charles Fred and we have decided to share some of them with you. They are pretty remarkable pictures and a worthy addition.
Please enjoy the ancient tradition of Turkish oil wrestling...
Of course away from the wrestling, the guys like to relax...
(These are like all the photos you always hoped for in National Geographic but never got!)
If you would like to see the full set of Charles Fred's photos, you can do so on his Flickr site here. We are so grateful to Charles for making them available to share.
Please note that the copyright in these photos belongs to Charles Fred but his CC licence means we are able to show them on our blog for you to enjoy.
A bitta kulcha - doncha just love it! Turkish delight indeed...
